Police Time Capsule Project
Apr, 27 2017 12am

Public Invited to Submit Items for Police Time Capsule Public Information Officer Susan Danielsen from Greensboro Police Department The Greensboro Police Department, in partnership with Lambeth-Troxler Funeral & Cremation Service, is inviting members of the public to submit items to be placed in a time capsule to be opened 100 years from now. (Watch the video here https://youtu.be/FnKYjKgSGOk) The time capsule will bring together a collection of personal memorabilia that reflects the current cultural climate of police and community relations. Such memorabilia can include art, photos, letters, essays, poems, or songs, for example. A second capsule, containing objects chosen by GPD employees, will be buried alongside the capsule containing items submitted by the public. These items include: a body worn camera, badge, patch, photos, CSI items, and a letter from Chief Scott to the chief of police serving in 2117. “Through the objects placed in these time capsules, we are sending messages to future generations about how our officers and our profession were perceived during this time in our city’s history,” said Chief Wayne Scott. “Every object in the time capsule will tell a story. Collectively, those stories will provide an emotional context for what it was like to be an officer and a community member in Greensboro.” Size restrictions of the capsules limit the number of memorabilia that can be placed inside them. “We don’t want the limited space to deter people from submitting objects to be placed in the capsule,” said Jenny Caviness, Manager of GPD’s Office of Community Engagement. “Every item that is submitted to us will either go in the capsule or on display in our headquarters.” A committee of police employees and community members will evaluate each item to determine if it will go in the capsule or on display. Caviness will notify contributors of the artifacts that will be placed in the capsule, and invite them to the burial ceremony. Guidelines for time capsule submissions, a release form, and judging criteria are located at www.gsopd.org. The idea for the time capsule was proposed by Steve Blackwell, managing partner of Lambeth-Troxler Funeral & Cremation Service more than a year ago. His donation of two engraved cremation vaults to serve as the time capsules will ensure contents are protected from external elements. “With the time capsule, what better way to celebrate life than capturing and preserving the essence of our police department’s vital role and responsibility in protecting life now and in the future,” said Blackwell. Blackwell is also contributing a plaque to mark the location of the time capsules and indicate the date they are to be opened. The time capsule will be registered with the International Time Capsule Society. Shared with all areas in Greensboro Police Department in General Read More
